Why Creativity?

'Everyone has huge creative capacity. The challenge is to develop them. A culture of creativity has to involve everybody, not just a select few.'  -Sir Ken Robinson

A few additional thoughts after some TAGT conference experiences focused around need for development of creative thinkers in light of the creative economy and emphasis in ISTE NETS & TX-TEKS standards...

Needed is an instructional mindset infused with efforts to--
  • Create a safe environment will support development of creative flexible thinkers where mistakes are considered a critical part of the learning process.
  • Encourage, share, and celebrate diverse ideas and ways of solving problems across content areas and situations.
  • Provide opportunities and choices that allow for flexible thinking and creative expression.
  • Essential guidance and modeling.
Sir Ken Robinson discusses the presence of creativity in all kinds of work in Picasso & the Plumber:Who is the True Creative? I see this in educators every day just as I see it in my brother, a skilled mechanic who painstakingly restores and rebuilds rusted old hulks of cars into vintage masterpieces.

More from Sir Ken Robinson:
“I wouldn't compare Picasso to a plumber and say that he's more creative) because he's an artist, because you can be creative in any domain.”

“Real achievement in any field, it seems to me, is a meeting point of a natural capacity for something, a passion for doing it, and a relentless attention to the refinement of craft.”

‘You can be creative at anything. You could be a creative scientist, a creative mathematician. You could be a creative film maker, a creative technologist, a creative electrician, a creative architect.’

'The fact is there is a lot you can do to help people become more creative. If someone tells you they cannot read or write, you don’t assume that they are not capable of reading and writing, but that they haven’t been taught how. It is the same with creativity. When people say to me that they are not creative, I assume they just haven’t yet learnt what is involved.'
