Shared Learning Targets

Too often, according to What Students Need to Learn:Knowing Your Learning Target by Connie M. Moss, Susan M. Brookhart and Beverly A. Long via Educational Leadership, students are 'flying blind.' They don't see clearly what is important for them to learn or where they are on their path to understanding it. But if we frame learning targets from students' points of view and in kid-friendly language at the outset, we can empower them with a clear sense of direction and self-awareness. This allows kids to see how they are progressing and empowers them to strategically work on 'getting there.' They are focused and moving in the right direction toward hitting those targets. During lessons, explanations of how each step or phase they are working through will lead to a specific outcome or ability 'to do' is also essential.  It can seem time-consuming and superfluous to write out, display, and refer to these daily learning goals, but there is a clear benefit in driving learning forward.
My renewed focus is on...
...referring to learning goals before, during and after lessons.
...asking students to restate goals to a partner or jot them down.
...checking for evidence of understanding of targets during independent or guided work.
...using rubrics to define elements of success & performance levels; developing students' understanding of success criteria through their analysis of work samples.
